Day 11

January 22, 2014

Happy Wednesday Homies! And happy day off from school to y'all back at home who got lucky with the snowstorm.... Janus, was it? (hahahaha)

So, guys. Let me tell ya. My core class is this hospitality class called "British Tourism: Knowing Britain Inside & Out" and my professor, as I mentioned in my blog a few days ago, looks like a thinner and older version of Hugh Grant. Not only that, but my professor (or Andy) oozes charisma. Now, I'm not that kind of girl, but I sit at the desk right in front of him and stare at him for the entire 4 hours of lecture. He's brilliant, witty, kind, and just charismatic! Ok I'll stop here for now but this class is overall excellent and on point.

Some things I learned three important things about English culture during today's lecture:

  • The people of this culture are very self-deprecating. They might say bad things about their country, but you musn't agree with them! You have to disagree with them because they don't actually mean what they say. It's just their way of not bragging?
  • Their term of endearment is by making fun of other people. Our professor warned us that, if people in our internship make fun of us, it is their way of expressing interest, acceptance, and a liking towards us, so we should just "take a piss" AKA "take a joke"
  • Understatement is huge. If someone goes to watch a show or a play, and you ask them "how was it?" they'll respond with "not bad" which will most probably mean "excellent"

After class, I went to our school library and borrowed a book called "Nothing Hell" by Rachel Johnson. It's the first book I've borrowed from the library to read for fun since high school years... I started to read it and it's pretty interesting. There are some quirks I still haven't learned so it can be confusing at times, but in other parts of the book, I understand what/where/who she's talking about - it's quite exciting.

I, and my friends, spent pretty much all of tonight planning our trips: finding a fairly priced and not shady but safe hostels/hotels, buying our bus tickets to and from Gatwick Airport to our destinations and vice versa, etc. !!! This is not easy stuff, people. No it is not. It is super exhausting and depressing when you keep refreshing your bank account. But I hope the trips are really worth it :) We still have to finalize spring break plans, but we're getting there.

The highlight of my day has to be my amazing dinner cooked by yours truly. I sautéed chicken, red peppers, onion and mushrooms with a dash of salt and pepper, and made some pasta on the side. It was glorious and I was so proud of myself :')

I always enjoyed cooking because it doesn't require exact measurements as baking does, and I can add in whatever and however much I want to fit my tastebuds!

Anywho, tomorrow, our class is going on a field trip to the National Portrait Gallery. Yippee!

Hopefully this weekend will be super exciting and adventurous so that I can post up some fresh pictures for y'all. Thanks for reading my blog. Hope you guys continue on this journey with me through it.

Cheers.

xx
